What is the problem or need you are seeking to solve?
In Sierra Leone rural communities, access to quality education, retention, and completion of school remain challenges for children in Sierra Leone. These factors are compounded by poverty, gender, discrimination, long distances to schools, perceived low value placed on education, negative social norms and practices such as Female Genital Mutilation, early child marriage, teenage pregnancy, an unsafe learning environment, families holding onto their cultural and traditional beliefs are making things more impossible for the majority of the children in this region to access quality education. This has resulted in a high percentage of teenage pregnancy, early child marriage, sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs), sexual assault, gender inequality, hunger and malnutrition. The Sinkunia community, cannot boast of any female graduate in any recognized university or vocational institution.
What are you going to do to solve it?
Championing inclusion of those who are traditionally excluded and fostering gender-transformative approaches to education.YoMSuD-SL Education Uninterrupted Innovation (YoMSuD-SL EUI) is an education project designed to bridge opportunities and skills for both Out-of-School and school-going children who are disadvantaged because of negative social norms, poverty, gender, discrimination and ethnicity. This program will provide opportunities for disadvantaged adolescent girls and boys including pregnant and lactating adolescent mothers after giving birth to go back to school, register Out-of-School children to Community Based Schools, and learn new skills for decent employment to contribute meaningfully to building sustainable communities in Sierra Leone.
This year five of our teenage mother beneficiaries have got university requirements and YoMSuD-SL is raising funds to send the five teenage mothers to university first in the history of Sinkunia Chiefdom to have a female university student.
How will this make a lasting impact on your community?
There are countless benefits of education to societies and citizens primarily regarding the quality of an individual’s life and the ease of fulfillment of personal ambitions, improves people’s understanding of the world around them, making them less susceptible to the influence of others and this creates an environment where social justice can thrive such as equal rights, equal opportunity, equal treatment. This Education project will help people in society to be more active in their struggle for a better quality of life. The necessity of educating the next generation is central to YoMSuD-SL.
